How long do Linz cookies last?
Nov 24, 2025
When we bake our first batch of Linz cookies, sooner or later the same question arises: where to store them so they last. Linz cookies do not like heat or closed, damp spaces. They do best in dry and slightly cool places, where they can lie down quietly and remain fragile. Here you will find some well-intentioned advice on how to store them properly so that they are good even after a few days.
How long do Linz cookies last?
Every year it is and will be the same answer. It's not in the recipe itself, but in how you store the candy. Not in the basement. And no, you can't see it.
Cold is the key
Candy requires coolness – around 10 to 16 °C . For example, a pantry, attic, balcony or a room where it is not hot are ideal places.
It will last longer in the fridge, but it will easily absorb the smells of the surrounding food – for example, morning glory. If you want to put it in the fridge, use tin or glass boxes with a lid, and it is best to give each type its own box.

The cream determines the shelf life
Unfilled varieties – such as pracny, rolls or simply baked Linz pieces – will last for 3 to 5 weeks .
But Linz cookies glued with cream are better eaten within 10 to 14 days . The cream simply shortens the shelf life, no matter how good it is.
A few little things that will help with the good condition of the candy
Never store candy in plastic wrap. The candy will become damp, soft, and lose its flavor.
Always let it cool completely before closing it in a box – even residual heat will create moisture.
And most importantly: don't mix scents . Storing Linz next to gingerbread is not the best idea.
When Linz softens
A short warm-up in the oven will help: 3 minutes at 150 °C and cooling on a wire rack . The brittleness often returns and it is definitely worth trying. I note that this applies to unfilled pieces.
How long do cookies last in the freezer?
If you are baking well in advance or you can't even see the cookies anymore, freeze the unglued Linz cookies . They will last up to 3 months in the freezer if you store them in a closed box and line them with baking paper.
Defrost slowly and at room temperature.
So how long to keep it?
– Linz without filling: 3 to 5 weeks
– Linz with marmalade: 2 to 3 weeks
– Linz with cream: 10 to 14 days
– Linz in the freezer: up to 3 months

You can bake the Linz cookies in advance, but don't glue them all together at once. Store the individual pieces in a dry and slightly cool place. Fill with jam or cream a few days before Christmas. Linz cookies taste best 2 to 4 days after they are glued together - that's when the flavors of the dough and jam or cream combine, the cookies soften, but still remain brittle.
